Mr. Kennedy: From Mr. MITB to Mr. Released... Released

>> June 11, 2009

So as everyone knows by now, WWE RAW superstar Mr. Kennedy was released last week. I dont think a reason was actually given to his release, as rumors of him being released due to inuring his wrist were laid to rest when Kennedy himself posted a video of him flailing both wrists around, proving he was fine. I think the accepted reason had to do with Vince being in a bad mood that particular Monday Night, and Kennedy was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Something along those lines.

So, what is the Genuine Thesis on Kennedy being released? No big deal.

First, let me say that when Mr. Kennedy debuted, I laughed at his gimmick. I mean, someone saying their name twice? Come on. But then I saw him in action. I thought he was great from the second I saw him. I thought he was a great heel and had loads of potential. I expected him to become World Champion in a few years time. He was even the last person Eddie Guerrero wrestled before he was tragically taken away from the wrestling world much too soon. So what happened?

Well, first came one injury. No big deal. Wrestlers get injured. He returned from that and was still popular, I still enjoyed him. He even went on to become Mr. Money In The Bank in 2007. That was pretty much a dead giveaway that the guy was about to be pushed into the main event, and him announcing in advance WHEN he would be cashing in his MITB briefcase was a change from cashing it in without anymore than a couple minutes notice.

Then another injury, forcing him to drop his MITB briefcase to Edge due to it being thought that he'd be out longer than he actually was. THEN he was actually rumored to be the one who would end up revealed as the illegitimate son of Vince McMahon... But he got suspended for the steroid scandal. Another shot Kennedy had at breaking out as a main star ruined.

This is where I feel Kennedy just lost anything he had going for him. Mostly, from this point on, I found Kennedy to be boring, uninteresting, and lackluster in most of his matches (few gems here and there).

And yet another injury came along, after he filmed his Behind Enemy Lines movie, turned face, and was drafted back to Smackdown!. The face turn, in all honesty, just killed Kennedy, especially for his time on Smackdown!, which only consisted of him making bad shills for his movie and making fun of MVP for losing matches. I would think MVP should be making fun of Kennedy for, you know, actually getting to wrestle.

So really, Kennedy was just his own worst enemy. He couldnt keep off the shelf long enough to capitalize on ANY opportunities that he was given, and his constant injury rate made it impossible for the guy to sustain any form of an aura or momentum. The fact that he denied using steroids only to be caught in the steroid scandal, and subsequent comments about using steroids/believe he should be allowed to do what he wants to his body, didnt do him any favors either. It became hard to really get behind the guy when you just didnt know if he would end up getting injured in a few months time or what. Kennedy went from someone I loved seeing on television to someone I just could not care about at all and didnt want to see, both in segments and in matches.

Now that he is gone from the WWE, maybe Kennedy will go to Japan or go to a few indy promotions and keep working things out. If he can show improvement in his ring skills and prove to not be as injury prone, Im sure the WWE would take him back. If that ever happens, I will gladly give the guy a second chance to see if he can go from Mr. Injury Prone to Mr. Momentum once again.
